Chapter Chapter 2 in Religious Tourism and the Italian Economy, 1870—1950, 2025, pp 27-62 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the relationship between tourism and the Catholic Church within the broader framework of Italian economic development from national unification to the post–World War II period. Starting from the failure to achieve true economic unity after the nation formed in 1861, the chapter explores the structural weaknesses of the agricultural system and the slow rise of industrial activity. Through an analysis of key phases of economic development, it shows how Italy’s modernization was uneven and often driven by international contingencies. In parallel, the chapter presents a historiographical reflection on the Catholic Church’s presence in Italian society, particularly through Social Catholicism. Numerous historical studies are cited, focusing on the Church’s role in promoting cooperative credit, vocational education, and social assistance—revealing a deep connection between the Catholic world and the shaping of alternative development paths. The historiographical perspective offered allows for an interpretation of the Church not as a marginal actor, but as an integral part of Italy’s economic and social transformation.
