Chapter 8 in Knowledge-Based Growth in Natural Resource Intensive Economies, 2018, pp 215-232 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter has three main purposes. First, it seeks to sum up the functions and performances of the particularly ‘flexible’ and ‘adaptable’ knowledge organisations analysed in this book, which largely drew on foreign technology and expertise, and had the ability to adapt to new global and economic circumstances. The interconnections between knowledge organisations, both in Norway and abroad, are emphasised. Second, it points out that the state has a long history of supporting and financing knowledge development. Third, the underlying mechanisms for the development of the knowledge organisations are analysed and related to a particularly ‘outward-looking’ attitude and ‘open’ institutional context in Norway, not only formal, but also informal.
