Abstract:
Abstract Overcrowding is a significant issue for many prestigious tourist destinations worldwide. This systematic literature review examines the possible uses of metaverse technologies to address tourism overcrowding, also referred to as overtourism, applying the PRISMA guidelines and the Dynamic Capabilities Framework. Metaverse technologies can potentially reduce overcrowding, offer immersive experiences, support local tourism enterprises, and improve cultural heritage preservation. However, challenges like technological barriers, financial implications, inclusivity concerns, and privacy considerations hinder their widespread adoption. This study aims to advance the subject by illuminating the use of metaverse-related technologies against overcrowding and towards resilience and sustainability. It also addresses a gap in the literature on how these tools can be operationalised for overcrowding management. The findings could offer policymakers and industry practitioners actionable insights into opportunities, limitations, and implementation pathways for emerging technologies.
