Chapter 4 in European Banking, 2011, pp 39-86 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract This chapter is designed to explore the macroeconomic structural changes in the EU-27 countries over the last decade. It is exceptionally important to realize the divergence among the EU developed (EU-15) and developing countries (EU-12 or NMS) in order to provide critical investigation on the state of the European banking industry. Despite the general political and economic convergence in the EU, the macroeconomic and financial structure of various countries has remained diverse. In an attempt to investigate the prevailing substantial differences, this chapter examines the macroeconomic situation of individual EU countries through a comparison with the EU-27 average. Looking at main indicators, for instance, GDP growth, GDP per capita, interest, inflation and unemployment rates as well as important regional implications, the distinction between the EU-15 and NMS reveals a better understanding of the differences between the two groups of countries, as well as of the homogeneity and development in each group of countries over time.
