The World’s largest banks

Alfred Slager

Chapter 4 in The Internationalization of Banks, 2006, pp 68-86 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Internationalization is shaped and moved by the world’s largest banks. Chances are, when walking in a main street in a city somewhere in the world, whether Europe, South America or Asia, that the branch or ATM in sight is probably owned by one of the world’s 25 largest banks. The “six handshakes” idea finds its counterpart in banking: a customer somewhere in the world is probably always within six blocks of one of the world’s largest bank branches. Who are the world’s largest banks, what are their characteristics, and what are their (dis)similarities? This chapter presents an overview of the bank sample and discusses its key indicators.
