Jobs and Education

Chapter 3 in Household Finance, 2013, pp 55-84 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract An old Chinese proverb has it that if you plan for ten years, plant rice; if for ten years, plant trees; if for a hundred years, educate men. In a modern society jobs and education go together like horse and carriage. Education is the gateway for jobs if, and only if, the choice of a career is made with great care and what one learns matches the career’s needs. Education is also one of the “entitlements”: as primary and secondary education in Britain and America, and from maternity to university in continental Europe.
