Home Ownership: Shelter or Burden?
Dimitris N. Chorafas
Chapter 8 in Household Finance, 2013, pp 177-198 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract “Your home is your castle,” says an old proverb. Your home is also your house, and your house is a real estate investment which — like it or not — is subject to market cycles and whims which eventually confront the home owner. House prices are volatile, mortgage interest rates rise and fall, and the heavy hand of the government as well as the law of the land (evidently, including the tax code) shape the house owner’s behaviour (see the contrast between Canada and the United States at the time of the Clinton Administration’s push for home ownership in sections 8.2 and 8.3).
