Chapter Chapter 5 in Mobile Phones and Development in Africa, 2023, pp 91-153 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter reviews existing academic literature on the impact of these digital initiatives on development outcomes, focusing on the key thematic areas outlined above. The literature spans the fields of economics, computer science, and sociology, with some additional references from the public health field. We then seek to explain the null results in some studies, addressing the issues of complementary markets, heterogeneous effects, sample size, imperfect compliance (in particular for SMS interventions), and technological interfaces.
