Chapter Chapter 1 in Gerónimo de Uztáriz and his Economic Work, 2025, pp 1-20 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter aims to introduce the figure of Uztáriz and to underline the importance of his Theórica (1724) in both the Hispanic and European contexts. The state of the art on these issues is discussed in detail, and the book’s main objectives are set out. The chapter highlights Uztariz’s book as an attempt to establish a “new politics” for the Spanish Monarchy and concludes by emphasising its international dimension: to speak of the Theórica is to speak of the origins of the “science of commerce” in the European Enlightenment.
