Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the intellectual history of the concept of usury, and the changing nature of the debate that surrounded the concept. The chapter surveys the opinions of past and present scholars on the subject, in an attempt to reconsider some modern errors and misconceptions on the topic of usury and interest. In particular, we engage in a comparative analysis of the views of the early Church Fathers and the medieval Schoolmen, on the one hand, and those of modern philosophers and economists, on the other.
