Trade-off between Productivity and Employment in Transition Countries: An International Comparison

Misbah Tanveer Choudhry and Bart Ark

Chapter 5 in Economic Growth and Structural Features of Transition, 2010, pp 104-127 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In order to attain long-term sustainable economic growth, creation of employment opportunities along with promotion of higher productivity is a basic essential. Policy makers in developed, developing, emerging and transition economies are emphasizing the need to improve workers productivity. However, at the same time it needs to be considered that labour productivity will be increased by the substitution of capital intensive methods for labour intensive methods in production processes, leading to a potential loss of jobs.
