Abstract: Abstract A negative perception of immigration has become widespread in Western European countries, and this includes the latest wave of migration (see e.g. Canoy et al., 2010 on the perception of Poles in the UK). Parties with an anti-immigration agenda have celebrated electoral successes in some of the EU’s richest countries such as Austria, the Netherlands, or the UK. Opinion polls show that in Western European countries, a majority believed that ‘immigration should be reduced’. Many fear the impact of immigration on the labour market and on social protection (see Boeri, 2009; Crepaz, 2008).
