Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, we will analyse the impact of East–West migration on selected social policy regimes in the old and new member states. As we have seen in Chapters 2 and 3, the mobility of persons can in certain cases put a strain on the financial feasibility of redistribution. The wave of East–West migration that started in the late 1980s and lasts until today may therefore impact social protection systems in both the old and the new member states. This type of potential financial stress only concerns those systems that systematically redistribute between different groups of persons (income groups, generations, household types, etc.) and only occurs if the migrants’ characteristics differ significantly from natives with regard to the respective criteria.
