Abstract:
The purpose of the paper is to describe non-farm economic activities in two towns of Iloilo in a comparative context. It is argued that with agricultural modernization of a range of non-farm activities are induced and the degree of these activities vary with the level of modernization. It is found from the data on the two towns that non-farm activities have emerged side-by-side with agricultural modernization and that there relative conditions can also be associated with their relative stage of modernization. Some development insights and general policy options are advanced as resulting from the study and as directions for further work.
