The maritime container transport structure in the mediterranean and italy

Alga Foschi ()

Discussion Papers from Dipartimento di Economia e Management (DEM), University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy

Abstract: In this paper we will describe the liner shipping industry in the Mediterranean and in Italy. The structure of the industry is representative of the oligopolistic structure that is taking shape on a worldwide level. In particular the main terminals in Italy have undergone a "colonization process" by the big liner shipping companies. At the same time the Italian shipping industry is made up of small to medium companies that are strong in inter-regional and specialized traffic.
