Abstract: The paper analyzes sustainable development and the concept of geographical information systems (GIS). It presents the activity of local administrations and the companies that manage the water, gas, energy or phone supplies and it suggests that all the above implement GIS techonologies.For example, sustainable development also implies the fact that local administrations and the companies that manage the local supplies must use them carefully; beyond the resource control, they also have to reorient and optimise their technological flow. The main points of the paper is that in order to respond to the needs of actual and future generations, the proper use of urban resources is a MUST for the responsible companies and local administrations as well.
