MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: This study explores Timur’s economic legacy, examining the system he established to sustain and prosper his vast empire. Timur’s economic policies, which were closely linked to his conquests, played an important role in revitalizing the Silk Road and transforming cities such as Samarkand and Herat into economic and cultural centers. This study examines the main elements of Timur’s economic system, such as centralized administration, taxation system, development of cities and agricultural policies. It also highlights Timur’s efforts to secure long-distance trade routes and unite different reğions into a coherent economic framework. The analysis highlights the specific features and limitations of Timur’s model, especially its structure based on conquest-based wealth and the forced displacement of skilled human capital. It also addresses the socio-economic implications of Timur’s economic policies and contrasts the prosperity of urban centers with the burdens on rural populations. Timur’s economic strategies had a lasting impact on the economic history of Turkestan and Eurasia more broadly, demonstrating the transformative potential of trade, infrastructure and cultural development.
