George Halkos and Panagiotis-Stavros Aslanidis

MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: This report examines the role of institutional governance in shaping sustainable development in Greece over the period 2000–2024. The report utilizes data from the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) database developed by the World Bank. The analysis focuses on six key institutional dimensions, i.e., (i) voice and accountability, (ii) political stability, (iii) government effectiveness, (iv) regulatory quality, (v) rule of law, and (vi) control of corruption. In the analysis, trends of institutional performance are evaluatedand explored regarding their implications for sustainable development. The findings reveal significant fluctuations across governance dimensions, particularly during periods of economic and political instability, highlighting the uneven progress of institutional reforms. The conclusions underscore the crucial role of transparent and democratic institutions as foundations for sustainable development policymaking. The policy implications focus on how effective policymaking should seek to protect public security without undermining fundamental freedoms of people, ensuring that both security measures and individual rights are governed by a transparent, accountable, and impartial justice system.
