Sources of Growth in DRC before Independence: A cointegration analysis

Abstract: This article studies the sources of growth in DRC (Belgium Congo) from 1920 and 1956, along the works of Bernardin Akitody and Matthias Cinyabuguma (2004) dedicated to the post-independence period. It assesses the relative importance of total factor productivity (TFP) and factors accumulation, using econometrics and growth accounting. The result is that this historical period of the DRC economy is marked by a remarkable presence of TFP, followed by physical capital and labor. Whilst human capital only represents a small proportion, relative to other factors. This article also attempts a comparison with Akidoty and Cinyabuguma (2004). We also discuss the Acemoglu-Johnson-Robinson intuition. Cet article étudie les sources de la croissance en République Démocratique du Congo (alors Congo-Belge) avant son indépendance, de 1920 à 1956. Dans ce sens, il est le prolongement du travail de Bernardin Akitoby et Matthias Cinyabuguma (2004), consacré à la période après indépendance. Il évalue, comme celui-ci, l’importance relative de la Productivité Totale des Facteurs (PTF) et de l’accumulation des facteurs, en utilisant la méthode économétrique et la comptabilité de la croissance. Il aboutit au résultat selon lequel cette période de l’histoire de l’économie congolaise a été marquée d’une présence remarquable de PTF, suivie de capital physique et du travail. Pendant que le capital humain ne représente qu’une faible proportion comparativement aux autres facteurs. Par ailleurs, cet article esquisse une comparaison avec celui des auteurs cités. De là, il procède également à une discussion de l’intuition de Acemoglu-Johnson-Robinson.
