Abstract: [eng] Abstract This article is based upon the analysis of the fides of 13 195 young men, who were students at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, from its foundation in 1794 up to 1887 ; it is an anthropométrie study of their height.variables which have been taken into account include the students' social and geographical origins (Paris, Northern and Southern France). On the whole students were taller than other Frenchmen, as they mostly came from well-to-do familier. Average height decreased during the early decades of the 19th century, but rose later. Correlations between rises and falls of the standard of living, on one hand, height and therefore nutritional status on the other, are not quite coherent. Many unsolved problems deserve further study. [fre] Résumé A partir de l'examen de 13 195 dossiers d'élèves de l'école Polytechnique depuis sa création jusqu'en 1887, une étude anthropométrique de la taille a été faite. Elle a été conduite suivant les milieux sociaux d'origine ; suivant le recrutement parisien et provincial nord et sud. La taille plus élevée, dans l'ensemble, appartient aux milieux aisés et une tendance générale à l'augmentation se remarque au cours du XIXe siècle, après une baisse temporaire au début du siècle. Cependant la corrélation entre élévation ou baisse du niveau de vie et élévation du niveau biologique, ne se fait pas de manière cohérente. Beaucoup de questions à étudier restent posées.
