Abstract: [fre] Cet article tente de répondre à la question : y a-t-il eu des changements structurels dans le système bancaire allemand et y en aura-t-il dans le futur ? On ne peut répondre à ces questions qu’en tenant compte des spécificités de ce système et de sa dépendance vis-à-vis de l’architecture du système financier allemand. Cet article présente, tout d’abord, une brève comparaison internationale, mettant en lumière les particularités des banques allemandes. Puis, il analyse les développements clés dans le secteur bancaire allemand et les trois groupes de banques les plus importants lors des 30 dernières années, ainsi que les structures et performances courantes de ces 3 sous-secteurs. Les auteurs discutent ensuite des développements futurs compatibles avec la consolidation de l’industrie bancaire allemande. Ils concluent sur les probables évolutions de ce secteur dans le contexte du développement du secteur financier. . This paper tries to answer the questions : has there been structural change in the German banking system so far, and will there be structural change in the near future ? These questions can only be answered by taking into account the uniqueness of the German banking system and its dependence on the specific architecture of the German financial system. The article starts with a brief international comparison to highlight the peculiarities of banks in Germany. Then it takes a look at key developments in the German banking sector and the three most important groups of banks over the past thirty years and analyzes the current structure and performance of these three sub-sectors. The authors discuss after possible future developments with respect to a consolidation in the German banking industry. They conclude on likely developments in the banking sector into the larger context of financial sector development. . JEL classification : G21, G34
