Towards a Definition of Non-Market Activities

Oli Hawrylyshyn

Working Paper from Economics Department, Queen's University

Abstract: Recent attempts to value household work and other non-market activities have used a simplistic interpretation of opportunity cost of time theory. This paper attempt the development of practical definitions from basic utility theory. A household production function is posited which produces jointly non-market activities and welfare. Finally, four practical estimation methods are outline: simple opportunity cost of time; gross replacement cost; individual function replacement cost; and the production function approach.
