Mixed Methods Research in the Study of Political and Social Violence and Conflict

Kai M Thaler

Working Paper from Harvard University OpenScholar

Abstract: The study of political and social violence and conflict has expanded in recent decades, concurrent with a rise in the use of mixed methods research throughout the social sciences. This paper examines how qualitative and quantitative research and methods may best be integrated in studies of violence, critically reviewing examples from previous prominent work on violence and conflict and suggesting directions for future research. Many of the points and lessons are applicable to political and social science research more broadly. Through the use of mixed methods, we have the opportunity both to improve the accordance of theories and empirical studies with social reality and to gain a more nuanced understanding of the causes and consequences of violence and conflict.
