Abstract: The size of equity markets in emerging economies increased very significantly over the past decade both in absolute terms and as a share of global equity markets. Emerging equity markets also account for a rising share of global equity issuance. In large part, this growth has been spurred by strong economic growth and financial development within these economies. During the global financial crisis, as risk aversion increased, emerging equity markets' share of global market capitalisation fell sharply, though it has since more than recovered.
