Demand for dairy products in the European Union

Abstract: The objective of this project is to develop complementary modelling tools able to simulate the impact of alternative policy scenarios for the dairy sector over the medium term. Because the analysis of the European Union (EU) dairy policy in the future strogly depends on the evolution of the demand for dairy products and on the elasticity of demand, we have developed a specific analysis to study demand for dairy products in the European Union. We focus on two issues relative to the European Union demand for dairy products. First, we present estimates of the autonomous trend in consumption of dairy products in the fiteen EU member countries. Second, we estimate demand price and expenditures elasticities for dairy products in France and for Italy. ...French Abstract : L'objectif de ce projet et de développer des outils de modélisation complémentaires pour simuler l'impact de différents scénarios de politique laitière à moyen terme. Comme l'analyse de la politique laitière européenne dépendra fortement de l'évolution de la demande pour des produits laitiers ainsi que de l'élasticité de la demande dans le futur, les auteurs ont développé une analyse spécifique pour étudier la demande de produits laitiers en dans l'Union Européenne. Les auteurs s'intéressent plus particulièrement à deux caractéristiques de la demande de produits laitiers. Tout d'abord, ils présentent une estimation de l'évolution de la consommation de produits laitiers dans les 15 états membres de l'Union Européenne. Ensuite, ils estiment les élasticités de la demande de produits laitiers par rapport aux prix et aux dépenses en France et en Italie.
