Vertical integration, exclusive dealing and product line differentiation in retailing

Abstract: We analyze vertical integration and exclusive dealing in a model of vertical differentiation in which retailers compete in product lines. Depending on quality and cost differentials, the equilibrium is characterized either by integration and partial product lines differentiation or by exclusive dealing and complete product lines differentiation. The model leads us to recommendations for antiturst policy makers : exclusive dealing should be banned per se, while a rule of reason approach of vertical integration should be adopted. ...French Abstract : L'objectif des auteurs dans ce papier est d'analyser la différenciation entre distributeurs par les gammes de produits qu'ils offrent. Celle-ci diffère de la différenciation classique entre firmes, dans le sens oû elle résulte de relations verticales (endogènes) entre distributeurs et producteurs. Les auteurs considèrent un modèle de différenciation verticale avec deux produits de qualité différente, deux distributeurs et deux types de restrictions verticales possibles : contrat d'exclusivité et intégration verticale vers l'amont. L'équilibre est caractérisé, soit par une différenciation complète, par les produits offerts, entre les distributeurs, soit par une différenciation partielle dans laquelle le produit de qualité haute est toujours offert par les deux distributeurs et celui de qualité basse par un seul distributeur.
