Abstract:
This study examined the moderating effect of firm size on the relationship between board financial expertise and financial reporting quality of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria from 2003 to 2022. The study also used one dependent variable (financial reporting quality), one independent variable (board financial expertise), one moderating variable (firm size) and two control variables (firm age and board size). This study adopted longitudinal research designs, which involve collecting data from the same individuals or groups over an extended period. The population and the sample size had the same number of 10 listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria. The study used secondary data and panel regression technique for the analysis. The result for board expertise as moderated by firm size indicate that the coefficient has negative significant effect on the financial reporting quality of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria. In conclusion, in larger firms, the positive effect of board financial expertise on financial reporting quality may be mitigated or even reversed. Based on these findings, the study recommended that, given the moderating effect of firm size, companies should conduct periodic governance audits, focusing on the effectiveness of financial expertise in relation to firm size.
