Abstract:
This article describes the interdependent work/family system created by husbands and wives as they make decisions about careers and about the division of family work. I argue that although gendered choices in couples typically disadvantage women in a vicious cycle that creates inequality between husbands and wives both at home and at work, more egalitarian choices can initiate a virtuous cycle that promotes gender equality both in the family and in spouses' careers.
