Abstract:
Although several definitions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) associate it with voluntary initiatives, it is shown in the paper that CSR initiatives are motivated by the anticipation of regulations. In the context of globalization, the New Social Economic Movements are important actors of the institutional context as they put pressures on transnationals for the adoptions of guides, certifications and norms such as the Global Reporting Initiative and ISO 14001. The hybrid regulatory systems that takes shapes through these various initiatives is quite complex, as it involves numerous actors (private and public) at many levels (national and global) with an ambiguous status (voluntary but not really), and it will be faced with important management and transparency challenges.
