Efecto de la productividad laboral y del capital humano en la pobreza regional en Ecuador

Abstract: El objetivo de esta investigación es examinar empíricamente la relación entre la productividad laboral y el capital humano con la pobreza regional en Ecuador. Con el fin de corregir el sesgo causado por la endogeneidad y la omisión de la dependencia espacial, utilizamos regresiones con variables instrumentales y técnicas de econometría espacial. Estimamos dos conjuntos de regresiones. En el primero, la variable dependiente es la tasa de pobreza y la variable independiente es el capital humano. En el segundo, la tasa de pobreza está en función de la productividad laboral. En ambos conjuntos de modelos incluimos co-variantes asociadas con las características de las regiones. Los resultados encontrados muestran que la productividad laboral y el capital humano pueden ser mecanismos de política pública para reducir la pobreza en las regiones menos desarrolladas con efectos de derrame en las regiones vecinas.The objective of this research is to examine empirically the relationship between labor productivity and human capital with regional poverty in Ecuador. In order to correct the bias caused by endogeneity and the omission of spatial dependence, we used regressions with instrumental variables and spatial econometric techniques. We estimated two sets of regressions. In the first, the dependent variable is the poverty rate and the independent variable is human capital. In the second, the poverty rate is a function of labor productivity. In both sets of models we include covariates associated with the social and economic characteristics of the regions. The results show that labor productivity and human capital can be public policy mechanisms to reduce poverty in less developed regions with spillover effects in neighboring regions.
