Abstract: Rice production in Andhra Pradesh has risen remarkably in the last three decades. The farm harvest prices started falling below the minimum support prices in the state in the recent years. This is viewed by some as an indication of surplus production over its domestic requirements in the state, which has several policy implications. This paper makes an estimation of demand for rice in the last twenty years to assess the claim and makes projections for rice demand the next five years. Further, it explores into the structure of rice markets and nature of surplus of rice production, and contingent conditions necessary required for any policy of decontrol to avoid inflationary consequences.
