Abstract:
As exports have tumbled, the growth of the South Korean economy has slowed. This has led many to argue that the development of the service sector is necessary to address some of the structural problems of the economy, and the government has promulgated and implemented several policies designed to boost exports, expand domestic demand, and create jobs in the service sector in response. The service industry is increasingly not only a major target of industrial policy but also a popular subject of policy research. This stems from the relative ambiguity and complexity of the sectoral classification of the service industry and its economic activities, especially when compared to the manufacturing sector. It is against backdrop that in this study we aim to quantitatively assess the current state of the global service industry using a new model, the KIET Service Industry Global Competitiveness Evaluation Model (SIGCEM), and identify some of the implications carried by the analysis for policy and future research.
