Recent trends in the use of artificial intelligence tools for competition law enforcement

Abstract: Considering the recent development of the global economic environment and the technological revolution that is taking place, all the sectors of activity, whether public or private, have to keep up with these trends and have to adapt their strategies, management and activity to the new challenges that occur, nowadays, as a result.

Consequently, the article explores the official data regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that are implemented in the process of competition law enforcement by the national competition authorities (NCA). Therefore, the first part presents data-driven tools used by some of the most important competition authorities, in detection of competition law infringement cases, especially by those from Europe. Then, the following section highlights the improvements generated, but also the vulnerabilities brought by this type of tools based on AI. The paper was based on the literature review on the topic of the latest data-driven tools used in competition law enforcement but also in other public services.

The purpose of the article is to highlight the necessity of implementing AI tools by the competition authorities, in order to increase the performance of their activity.
