Abstract: The article discusses the existing approaches to the provision of social assistance to families with children. Based on the analysis of theoretical approaches to the formation of mechanisms of social assistance, legislative framework of social policy and experience of Russian regions are formed proposals for the modernization of mechanisms of social assistance to families with children, in a rapidly changing social situation. The authors' conclusions are based on the results of the project implemented in the framework of the Program of researches of the Russian Academy of education.
