Abstract: The digitization trend is increasingly forcing industrial companies to transform their value-added network into a digital environment in order to remain competitive and profitable. However, it is unclear which is the best approach to each digitization project and which projects are really profitable. This article is intended to provide an insight into the best practice approaches of major German industrial companies. In particular, it presents the conditions that enable companies to successfully implement digitization projects. In addition, it is shown that the measurability of success and the derivation of an amortization period are relevant research topics to evaluate the benefits of digitization projects.
