Abstract: The article argues that the solution of the strategic task of socio-economic development of the region is associated with the search for development prospects. It is proved that in the development of strategies, most of the problems are concentrated in the field of effective selection and scientific justification of strategic priorities of the region. It is proved that the identification of regional development priorities is largely facilitated by the use of "smart" benchmarking tools.
