Abstract: The early work of A.V. Chayanov "Peasant farming in Belgium", first published in 1910 in the journal "Peasant Business", is published. The article is based on Chayanov's personal observations made during his stay in Belgium in the summer of 1909, where, according to one of his biographers, he went to search for development models suitable for extrapolation to the Russian agricultural core. On behalf of the Belgian farmer Octave Kolyar, the article tells about the changes that occurred in the agricultural sector of Belgium in the last quarter of the XIX century after the global agricultural crisis. The influx of North American and Russian grain into the Belgian market (the so-called "grain invasion"), which negatively affected the price situation, led agricultural producers to realize the necessity of changing agricultural specialization - Belgium turned from a grain exporter into an exporter of livestock products. The article seems to allow a deeper understanding of the ideological quest of A.V. Chayanov at the initial stage of creativity, which preceded the theoretical design of the model of labor-consumer balance. Not only in his early works, but also and throughout his work, Chayanov turned to comparative studies of the development of Russian and European agriculture, where agricultural examples from Belgium played an important role. But only, perhaps, in this article, Chayanov proved himself not only as an agrarian economist and sociologist, but also acted as a rural anthropologist, giving a specific description of the portrait of a peasant against the background of the history of his economy.
