Abstract:
The article examines the origins and current state of liberal ideology in Western countries. The characteristic of the reasons that caused its crisis is given. The role of Christianity and, above all, Protestantism in the formation of the basic values of liberalism is considered. The position is argued that many liberal values are common to all countries of Christian culture and Russia is no exception, but due to the peculiarities of historical development, our country has not formed an independent civil society as a necessary condition for ensuring the rights and freedoms of man and citizen. In view of these circumstances, it is important to create conditions for its formation, including using the potential of the Russian Orthodox Church (hereinafter the ROC), as the most mass non-governmental organization.
