Abstract: China-Russia relations play an important role in contemporary international order. Despite this, their content and dynamics at the regional level generally remains outside the focus of researchers and theoretical explanation. The study analyzes current state and dynamics of bilateral relations at the level of one particular region: Republic of Tatarstan. The analysis showed that although the China-Russia relations play a role in the region, they are relatively limited. An explanatory approach, based on the assessment of both nation- and regionallevel actors, is proposed. It is concluded that the major interesant and potential driver for the advancement of bilateral relations is the regional government of Tatarstan.
