Abstract: The revival of religion in the post-Soviet period naturally contributed to the formation in the mass consciousness of the population of the need for religious knowledge, which led to the emergence in modern Russian society of an Autonomous confessional education, respectively, and historically existing religious schools of various levels (maktabs, madrasahs, Islamic universities). Empirical data show that the interviewed experts, parents and students of schools at the mosques emphasize the need for maktabs to function in society at the present time, and there are a variety of arguments for this, in particular, the thesis that it is possible to obtain correct knowledge about Islam, along with the possibility of countering the spread of radical ideology, especially among young people. In addition, respondents emphasize the role of maktabs in familiarizing people with the basics of the Muslim faith, integrating Muslims into a multi-confessional Russian society, and, importantly, they act as an obstacle to radicalization of consciousness, because they perform educational and religiouseducational activities. In addition, the attitudes of the respondents show a positive attitude to the possibility of introducing the theology course into the educational system (both middle and high-level), which causes some concern against the background of destructive processes taking place in the religious sphere.
