Abstract: Poverty as an economic phenomenon has been present in our economy from the very beginning of market transformations. The existing theoretical concepts in different ways assess poverty as an economic category. Poverty indicators of these concepts characterize negative dynamics in our country. The number of the poor is increasing. The economic consequences of poverty affect the activities of small and medium-sized enterprises. Such consequences are manifested in population’s purchasing power decrease, changes in the structure of demand towards a low-price segment and, in general, negatively affect the activity of small and medium-sized business in the economy.
