Abstract: The problem of volunteering and the volunteer movement in modern Russian society has become actualized for a number of reasons, including transformations of a greater negative nature in the field of social policy, and as a consequence, the emergence of a large stratum of the poor population who cannot meet their minimum material needs. Not only these factors, but also many other reasons contributed to the emergence of people with an active civic position, who self-organized, and without pinning any hopes on the authorities, to provide assistance to the population, a particular person in a difficult life situation. Therefore, it is relevant to establish the motivation for the participation of the population in the volunteer movement. According to the results of the study, it was found that the key incentives for respondents to participate in the volunteer movement are moral and ethical principles, the desire to help people in need. At the same time, no less important is an active civic position, awareness of responsibility, the desire to participate in socially useful activities and the desire to try oneself in a new business. The results of the study are the basis for the conclusion about the importance of volunteering for the interviewed Dagestan population, while the respondents, when declaring the relevance of participation in it, demonstrate a passive civic position and behavior.
