Abstract: The article is devoted to the emergence and development of imperial statehood. Its analysis is carried out from the standpoint of political science. The definition of empire is formulated and its typological features are highlighted. The development of imperial systems in the past and present is considered. Special attention is paid to the Bonapartist empires of the XIX century. The specifics of the development of the Russian Empire and the problems of imperial statehood at the present stage are analyzed. The colonial aspect of imperial statehood is considered. The reactionary nature of the fascist empires of the mid-twentieth century is shown and the main features of US imperial liberalism are highlighted.
