Abstract: The article problematizes the development of science and education in the system of higher education of present Russia. The author comments upon the principal theses of the Open letter of Professor Vera Afanasyeva, addressed to the Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and further develops them. The author justifies the necessity to return the status of cultural value to Russian education and science.
