Abstract: The article is an attempt to give characteristics to the concept of progress and to set up criteria to evaluate the given process. The authors summarize the current materials, devoted to the definition of this concept. One of the authors introduces a universal criterion of progress and suggests the specifying criteria for this process in different spheres of reality.
