Abstract: The article analyzes the process of the clergy implementing the function of catechists in rural secular schools. The dual attitude of priests to teaching Law of God, a compulsory subject in primary school, both conscientious and indifferent, is emphasized. The author considers the facts of ignoring the duties of a catechist throughout the specified period and describes the reasons for this phenomenon: employment due to the fulfillment of spiritual demands, long distances between schools, poor communication, and lack of material motivation.
