Abstract: The genesis of the development of representative democracy in Russia is investigated, the ways of representing the interests of the population through public authorities are studied and the peculiarities of representative democracy in the Russian Federation are outlined. The advantage of using forms of representative democracy in comparison with direct democracy in the modern period is proved. Shortcomings in the formation of representative bodies of power are analyzed and ways of their elimination are proposed.
