Abstract: Rural tourism is a recent phenomenon. In the European countries is has been practiced for several decades, but what’s new to this, is the size of this phenomenon in the rural space. The development is determined by the existence of 2 motivations for the rural tourism: on the one hand, we are talking about the development of the rural area, and on the other hand, about an alternative to the mass tourism, the traditional one. The tourism is one of the fields providing one of the most important economic and development opportunities for the mountainous area, benefiting of many advantages. The development of the mountainous tourism also faces a series of challenges. Nevertheless, the development of tourism can contribute to the increase of incomes for people in the mountainous area, by valuing the advantages offered by the relief, together with its protection against degradation. The European Committee has recently recognized tourism as one of the biggest economic departments, considering the threats this industry must face.
