EVALUATING JOB SATISFACTION IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM THE GREEK LABOUR MARKET

Abstract: The evaluation of job satisfaction is significant due to its effect on workers' physical and mental health and job-related behaviours like productivity, absenteeism, and turnover. This study aims to determine the level and critical factors of job satisfaction among Greek private-sector employees. In this regard, the examination of the literature’s critical instruments for assessing job satisfaction is presented. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) was used to conduct a quantitative survey, with findings analysed using descriptive statistics. Convenient sampling was used for data collection. The empirical results indicate that employees in the Greek private sector are marginally satisfied with their jobs. Factor analysis distinguishes the intrinsic job facets of ability utilisation, independence, and social status, along with the extrinsic facets of working conditions and co-workers as the main drivers of job satisfaction. Further, the intrinsic factors influence more overall job satisfaction than the extrinsic ones. Finally, among the socio-demographic factors, employees’ education attainment determines job satisfaction in the private businesses of the Greek labour market.
