The Ostentatious Lifestyles of Nigerian Public Servants: Implications for Performance

Abstract: The Nigerian public service has often come under intense public criticism for its glaring ineptitude nature over the years. One major issue which is central to the inefficiency and low productivity in the public service is the persistent failure of government to properly ethical consciousness and disposition of the Nigerian public servants. This paper contends that there is strong nexus between the low level of professional conduct of public servants and the inefficiency and unproductivity in the public service. The continuous flouting of the Public Service Rule and Regulations and its code of conduct by public servants as well as the weak government agencies to enforce compliance with the public service ethos and professional conduct of public servants. The paper suggests a more radical approach to control the ostentatious lifestyles of public servants in view of their implications for productivity and national development.
